题目Title:Exploring Multi-case Theory Building Methods
摘要Abstract:This seminar focuses on multi-case theory building. It describes the approach’s origins and motivations in the 1980’s as well as its primary defining features including it critical emphasis on theory building. It also discusses common misconceptions (i.e., what the method is not) and thoughts on the future if there were to be a Building Theories from Case Studies 2.0. Overall, the intent is to sharpen understanding of multi-base theory building by both reprising and refreshing the method.
报告人简介Biography:Kathleen M. Eisenhardt is the S.W. Ascherman M.D. Professor at Stanford and Faculty member of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program. Her most recent book (w/Don Sull) is “Simple Rules: How to Thrive in a Complex World. Eisenhardt’s research sits at the nexus of strategy, organization theory and entrepreneurship where she focuses on high-velocity markets and technology-based firms. She is currently studying strategy in distinct economic “games” like 2-sided marketplaces, cognitive processes, and strategy in nascent markets, particularly using multi-case methods. She has recently blended multi-case theory building with machine learning for more robust theory building. Eisenhardt has been a Fellow at the World Economic Forum (Davos), and won numerous research awards that include AOM’s career Scholarly Contributions to Management Award, Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research and SMS’ career C. K. Prahalad Distinguished Scholar Award. She holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Computer Science. Her PhD is from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

题目Title:What is "Trustworthy" Qualitative Research? Old Debates & New Solutions
摘要Abstract:Although there are many ways that people can evaluate qualitative research, there have been numerous debates over what makes for "rigorous" or "trustworthy" qualitative research. Historically, this tension can be found in two major schools of thought. The first suggested that qualitative research should follow criteria similar to how quantitative (positivist) research is evaluated (e.g., reliability and validity). The second camp, by contrast, believed that qualitative research should be thought of, and thus evaluated, using very different criteria than quantitative research. More recently, the debate about trustworthiness has come to include the use and the mis-use of qualitative "templates." The purpose of this talk is to discuss these different perspectives on and disagreements about trustworthiness in qualitative research, and to offer a way forward via methodological bricolage.
报告人简介Biography:Michael G. Pratt (Ph.D. University of Michigan) is the O’Connor Family Professor at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, and is an Academy of Management Fellow. He has written and published extensively on various issues related to qualitative research, including how to form research questions and select topics, how to conduct ethnographic research, how to do observations, as well as how to write, evaluate, and publish qualitative research. He currently serves as an associate editor for the Administrative Science Quarterly. Prior to this appointment, he was the inaugural qualitative research editor for the Academy of Management Journal. Pratt has co-edited two books, and his research has appeared in such outlets as the Academy of Management Annual Review, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, OBHDP, Organizational Research Methods, Organization Science, and in numerous edited books. His research has been picked up by such varied and storied outlets as the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Discover Magazine, Fast Company, New York Times, Time Magazine as well as The New Yorker. A recipient of numerous academic accolades, he received the Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management Review in 2007 (with Erik Dane), and was a finalist for the Best Paper Award in the Academy of Management Journal (with Lily Crosina) this year.

题目Title:How to publish qualitative research in top tier management journals
摘要Abstract:In this interactive session, I will discuss how scholars can increase their odds of success of publishing qualitative research in top tier management journals. I will discuss why it might no longer be true that it is significantly more difficult to publish papers using inductive qualitative methods than deductive quantitative research in top management journals. However, the cognitive approaches underpinning each method are quite different and understanding them are key to success. Time will be reserved for the audience to ask open questions about issues that are of interest to them.
报告人简介Biography:Dr. Quy Nguyen Huy is a professor of strategy at INSEAD since 1998. He is known as a pioneering world scholar in linking social-emotional and temporal factors to the performance of strategic change and organizational innovation. Dr. Huy’s research on strategic change, strategy execution, and organizational innovation has won eleven international awards and was published in prestigious scholarly and practice journals such as the Administrative Science Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. Dr. Huy’s research on middle managers was published in and selected by Harvard Business Review as “Breakthrough Ideas for Today's Business Agenda."

题目Title:Caveat Venditor- Trust Asymmetries in Acquisitions of Entrepreneurial Firms (2009 AMJ Best Paper)
摘要Abstract:I explore the role of trust in acquisitions of entrepreneurial firms, taking a dyadic view that gives equal attention to buyers and sellers. The two parties have asymmetric views regarding whether their counterparts are trustworthy. I outline how these asymmetries emerge, persist, and influence behavior, including tendencies to behave deceptively and to guard against deception. I also find that buyers’ and sellers’ beliefs concerning whether their counterparts are trustworthy and trusting are often erroneous. I explore the implications of these findings for developing a theory of trust asymmetries and argue that selecting buyers on the basis of trust increases rather than diminishes entrepreneurs’ vulnerability.

题目Title:Fostering a Positive CEO-Board Relationship Cycle in New Ventures
摘要Abstract:This multi-case inductive study examines how first-time venture CEOs learn to develop a positive work relationship with their boards. A positive CEO-board relationship is central to effective collaboration and venture success. Yet, first-time venture CEOs often have no training, guidance, or role-models. Drawing upon retrospective and real-time data, my emergent framework suggests that first-time CEOs begin this relationship using analogies from their recent work experience. Those who ultimately develop a positive CEO-board relationship, however, use three types of learning occasions to develop behaviors that address the central aims of both the boards and the CEOs in the relationship. The CEO behaviors are self-reinforcing and can set the CEO-board relationship in either a vicious or virtuous cycle. I contribute at the nexus of venture boards and learning.
