题目Title:The Best Practices in Case Study Research: A Shared Pattern among the Award-winning Case Study Articles in the Top Management Journals
摘要Abstract:
Case study method has been growing in its popularity in recent years as a salient method for organizational management research, but here is a serious lack of consensus regarding the proper roles and procedures in applying case study method in social research in general and organizational management research in particular. Although often evoked together, the two most popular approaches to case study, i.e., Yin’s and Eisenhardt’s approaches, differ in more aspects than what they agree on, so they tend to offer contrasting recommendations regarding the roles and procedures for case study. To explore how the two popular approaches are used in real practice and if there exist some other implicit approaches as our two core objectives, we choose to review the best practices in case study by comparing the award-winning case study articles in the top journals in the field organizational management research, and then build up an integrative approach to case study by identifying the shared pattern among the award-winning articles. The resulted integrated approach has the potential to become a more relevant and also more rigorous approach to case study as compared to the two most popular approaches.

Abstract:

Title:How to Write Good Teaching Cases and use them Effectively with Chinese Students
摘要Abstract:
In this interactive workshop Professor Liqun Wei and Dr Michael N. Young from Hong Kong Baptist University will focus on two topics: (1) writing good, engaging cases and (2) using them effectively in the classroom with Chinese students. Part 1 we will focus on case-writing. Writing good, effective cases is not easy. Today’s students have short attention spans and numerous distractions as readily available on smartphones. To be effective, cases need to be well-written and demonstrate a particular theme. They should utilize technology when possible and pique students’ interests. Professors Wei and Young will discuss how they attempt to write effective cases by sharing examples from their past experience. Part 2 switches from writing effective cases to using them effectively in the classroom with Chinese students. The stereotype of Chinese education is that it is “top-down”, centers on the lecturer, and puts emphasis on memorization of facts. On the other hand, case teaching, if done correctly, is “bottom-up”, centers on student, and puts emphasis on analysis, critical thinking and developing original ideas. Often times, case teaching is not done correctly in the Chinese classroom. Professors Wei and Young will share their experience with examples and share tricks they have learned in leading a case discussion with Chinese students. This will be an interactive workshop conducted in English. The audience is encouraged to bring examples of problems they have faced in writing and teaching with cases for sharing with participants.
