题目Title:Qualitative Research: New Ways of Seeing Management and Business
摘要Abstract:Qualitative research is gaining significant traction in high quality management journals. There are many reasons why qualitative research is among the fastest growing areas of research in high quality journals. First, qualitative research is often the source of ground-breaking insights that shapes future management theory. Whereas only 15% of submissions are qualitative, approximately 50% of the best paper prize winners are qualitative. Second, qualitative research is often able to build theory that not only offers significant theoretical insight, but also can generate practical insights. But, qualitative research is peppered with difficulties. In this talk, I will offer insights for researchers new to qualitative research and insights for those who are more experienced.
For the researcher new to qualitative research, I will offer insights into the minimum attributes to move qualitative research over the review bar. Even though the number of qualitative submissions is on the rise, approximately 40% of submissions are not sent for review at the Academy of Management Journal because they do not meet the Journal’s minimum review bar. For those researchers who have engaged in quantitative research, I will also show how your quantitative skills can be an asset for qualitative research and how qualitative research will sharpen your quantitative skills for theorizing.
For the experienced qualitative researcher, I will discuss some of the frontiers of the research. In a 2010 editorial with Kevin Corley for the Academy of Management Journal, we argued that qualitative research has “come of age.” Its legitimacy and status are no longer questioned. Yet, this coming of age has led to an ossification and normalization of research practices that has constrained progress. I will offer domains of data sources and analysis that I believe can push boundaries to help see phenomena in new ways.
At the end of this presentation, I hope you leave motivated to engage in qualitative research. You will have a greater appreciation of what qualitative research can add to management theory and practice and with some tools and insights that will help you embark on it more effectively.
报告人简介Biography:Dr. Bansal is the Canada Research Chair in Business Sustainability at the Ivey Business School at Western University (Ontario). She founded and directs Ivey's research centre for Building Sustainable Value and the internationally renowned Network for Business Sustainability (nbs.net). Both these organizations aim to strengthen the ties between research and practice to advance business sustainability. She has also garnered several accolades for her contributions to both the research and practice of sustainability, including titled a “Distinguished Scholar” (Organizations and Natural Environment Division of the Academy of Management in 2017), “Intellectual Shaman” (Sandra Waddock in her 2014 book on 28 people who have contributed to management thought), “Canada Research Chair” (Canadian government in 2013), “Faculty Pioneer” (Aspen Institute in 2008), and one of the inaugural “Clean50 for Clean Capitalism” (Delta Management Group in 2011).
Dr. Bansal’s research interests focus on the sustainability paradigm vis-à-vis business strategy. She has published over 42 peer-reviewed academic journals and 2 books on Business and the Natural Environment. She serves as a Deputy Editor for the Academy of Management Journal (2016-2019) handling all qualitative research. She has also served as an Associate Editor (2010-2013) for AMJ and has sat on nine editorial review boards. Her research has also been cited in the popular press including The Wall Street Journal, The National Post, Globe and Mail and The Independent. And, she was invited to speak at the TEDx Western event in 2013. She has also been awarded 14 government research grants, which has yielded approximately $10M and has raised approximately $2M in corporate funding. Dr. Bansal has been researching social and environmental issues since she completed her doctorate in 1996 at the University of Oxford.

题目Title:The Spirit of Academic Craftsmanship
摘要Abstract:In this talk, I will discuss the concept of academic craftsmanship. Borrowing concepts from the well-renowned sushi chef Sukiyabashi Jiro, I will discuss three principles of academic craftsmanship—falling in love with our work, pursuing perfection, and giving back to society. I will make the case that consideration and adherence to these principles will not only improve the quality of our work, but enhance the value of our academic community in society at large.

Shaw is Yeung Kin Man Professor in Business Administration, Chair Professor of Management, Head of Department of Management and Marketing, and Director of the Centre for Leadership and Innovation at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Academy of Management Journal. His research has appeared or been accepted for publication in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personnel Psychology, and Journal of Management, among other scientific outlets. He has been invited for visiting scholar positions and other speaking engagements in China, Finland, Austria, Denmark, Norway, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Spain, Israel, Macau, Ghana, Ethiopia, Czech Republic, Ireland, Belgium, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Thailand, Switzerland, and the USA. Prior to his appointment at PolyU, he was the Curtis L. Carlson School-wide Professor in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, the Clark Material Handling Company Professor at the University of Kentucky, an assistant professor at Drexel University, and an analyst for the Boeing Company. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1997.

摘要Abstract:The speaker will walk through the experience of a recent multi-case study project – idea generation, data collection, insight development, and ultimately thereviewer engagement. The speaker will also discuss how the process of executing the original study sparked several related projects.
报告人简介Biography:The best qualitative articles look easy to write. They tell a good story and advance theory in novel ways. But, the process of finding an interesting idea to publishing the final article is messy and non-linear. Many qualitative researchers have a drawer full of articles they were unable to publish. During this session, Bansal will discuss the process of publishing qualitative research. She will speak about some of her own personal experiences in publishing qualitative research, describing the path that she has taken. She will also describe the tips and traps based on her experiences as the Deputy Editor of the Academy of Management Journal, who manages qualitative manuscripts.

题目Title: “阐明”与“对话”:如何在定性研究中有效地回复审稿人意见?
摘要Abstract:Compared with quantitative research, qualitative research is more difficult to publish. Junior qualitative scholars are always incapable in dealing with reviewers’ comments, especially on research design, data analysis, and theorization. This workshop first categorizes reviewers’ comments into several groups and highlights some key points and suggestions in response. Second, numerous exemplars are given to illustrate how to revise in manuscript and response letter to satisfy reviewers. Finally, this workshop has an interactive discussion on responses to selected “sharp” questions.
相较于定量研究,定性研究的发表历程非常崎岖。面对审稿人在研究设计、数据分析、理论构建等方面的质疑,初学者常常会觉得手足无措。该工作坊首先就审稿人常问的问题进行大致分类,给出回答要点和建议。其次,对于每类问题通过大量的实例展示具体的修改细节。最后,针对审稿人提出的比较尖刻的问题,进行开放式讨论。
报告人简介Biography:卫田。复旦大学管理学院副教授。管理学博士(英国剑桥大学),工学硕士(清华大学),工学学士(清华大学)。曾为明尼苏达大学卡尔森商学院的访问学者,英国利兹大学商学院的Research fellow(研究员)。目前是国际商务学会(Academy of International Business, AIB)研究方法部亚洲地区负责人。主要研究方向为跨国并购和社会创业。曾多次在British Journal of Management, International Business Review, Journal of International Management, 以及Thunderbird International Business Review发表论文。目前,担任Management and Organization Review的特刊(”Doing qualitative research in emerging markets”)客座编辑。同时,主持国家及省部级科研项目六项。其中,国家自然科学基金项目两项。

报告人简介Biography:Ontology: realism vs. constructionism; objective vs. subjective; Epistemology: positivism vs. interpretativism; Methodology: deductive vs. inductive; logical vs. non-logical; Case Selection: unique vs. presentative; context-rich or context-free; Case Data: number vs. word; verbal vs. non-verbal; behavioral vs. meaning; superficial vs. deep; open-ended vs. close-ended; passive observation vs. active participation (action research); Case Study Focus: descriptive vs. prescriptive; process vs. content; cross-sectional vs. longitudinal; Case Study Purpose: theory-testing vs. teory-building; theory-extension vs. theory-creation. After presenting the above paradoxes in a systematic manner, I will focus more on how to manage such paradoxes in light of my perspective of yin-yang balancing, which is gaining increasing global recognition in the recent years. The overall theme is the root paradox of rigor and relevance, and we must balance the two opposite elements.
